Never a dull moment at Spencer Lodge - come and enjoy yourself
Lake Tarawera is an amazing place to visit. There is so much to do no matter what the season. The lake itself offers a wealth of activities.
Fishing. Lake Tarawera, situated under the now dormant Mount Tarawera, is one of the most remote and beautiful lakes within the Rotorua system. The trout that reside in the lake have an abundant food source consequently they grow rapidly and reach some of the most impressive sizes of any trout in New Zealand or indeed the world. Kayaking. You can bring your own or Spencer Lodge can provide a kayak for you including life jackets. Kayaking is a great way to explore all the nooks and crannies around Lake Tarawera. It's also a great way to get up close and personal with the wildlife that resides in and around the lake. An abundance of water birds including black shags, dab chicks, white faced heron, canada goose, black swan, shelducks, shoveler, teal, coots and pied stilt so don't forget to take a camera.
Hiking. Rotorua is a paradise for walkers and hikers. With some of the world’s most spectacular scenery, you are sure to find the track, trail or walkway that’s right for you. Just down the road from Spencer Lodge is Lake Tikitapu or blue lake which has a track all the way round and takes about 1.5 hours.
Lake Okareka, also a short drive from the lodge provides another relaxing walk of around 1.5 hours. The wetlands near the beginning of the walkway are home to a wide range of aquatic birds. A ‘hide’ has been constructed to take advantage of the outstanding bird watching opportunities.
Recognised as one of New Zealand's best short walks. The Tarawera Falls Walking Track runs parallel to the Tarawera River where on the way you pass two water falls and walk through some of the most beautiful native forest in New Zealand before reaching the spectacular Tarawera Falls themselves. To get to your walk you will taken on an exhilarating 25-minute water taxi ride across Lake Tarawera from The Landing to Te Tapahoro Bay (The Outlet) where you will be dropped off at the main jetty. Natural hot pools and hot water beach. Accessible by boat on the other side of Lake Tarawera is hot water beach. The boat trip Incorporates guided boat tour, Hot Water Beach & Natural Bush Hot Pool experience with cultural & geothermal commentary.
